Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats (To Celebrate My Puppy’s 1st Birthday!)
If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you may have seen one or two (or seventeen) pictures of my dog or family’s dogs. All of us together have 5 dogs. There are more dogs than people. We have 4 French Bulldogs and 1 Doberman. It’s a bit of a long story on how and why we got 3 Frenchies from the same litter, but the point is, we’ve got 3 pups turning ONE today! Or should I say seven, knowing dog years? So, I made them these Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats to celebrate.
Happy Birthday Cherry, Opie, and Maya!
Cherry is mine, Opie is my parents’ and Maya is my sister’s. Wanna hear their embarrassing nicknames?
Cherry = Cherry Berry
Opie = Opie Dopie (he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed)
Maya = Mai Tai
My Cherry Berry is known for her piercing eyes and peanut butter obsession.

Little Mai Tai wasn’t cooperating for the photoshoot so I only got Opie Dopes and Cherry Berry in this pic. They sat so well! Especially when these treats were involved.

These Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats are packed with peanut butter flavor, flavorful cinnamon, and tummy-friendly pumpkin and gluten-free oats. Your dog is sure to love ’em!
Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 cup 100% Pure Pumpkin Puree
- ½ cup Natural Peanut Butter
- 1¾ cups Oat Flour
- 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line 3 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Add all of the ingredients to a stand mixer bowl fitted with a beater attachment. Mix on medium speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix again. Mixture should be thick and fudgy, not sticky, like cookie dough.
- Roll the dough in between 2 sheets of parchment paper until it's ¼" thick. Use a mini bone cookie cutter to punch out bone shapes. Reroll the dough and punch out more cookies, until the dough is used up.
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until firm and dry. Let cool completely, then store in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Note: I revamped this recipe and added some more pictures to the post. I originally posted this recipe for Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats on April 6th 2013 for our first dog’s 1st birthday (Jax was our only dog at the time). It’s such a coincidence, Jax’s birthday is exactly my half birthday… ah, we were meant to be 🙂

We got him all dressed up and I baked him his own peanut butter cake suitable for his dietary needs (natural PB, brown rice flour, cinnamon, egg, applesauce, water).
Waiting patiently for us humans to snap our photos so he can shove his face into that cake.
We sang our Happy Birthday song like Marilyn Monroe and he dived head first into that cake.
Food coma ensued.
Because a personal birthday cake only lasts one meal, let’s make our pups some treats that’ll last a few days to a week. I made this super easy, super fun, 4-ingredient recipe using a mini dog bone cookie cutter. I love the healthy and natural ingredients, but most importantly, my dogs go crazy for these treats and are willing to do whatever trick I ask them to do (which is rare, since they’re so stubborn)!

Jax will do anything for these Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats. Sometimes I’ll just look over to find him standing like in the picture above… like, for 5 minutes straight. He’s adorable and makes my heart melt 🙂

I can’t believe how much I’ve bonded with Cherry. I’ve only known her for eight months, yet I love her SO so much. I ADORE her! Frenchies don’t live as long as some other dogs due to their numerous health issues, so I try to make her life as enjoyable and happy and exciting as possible. She’s had such a positive impact on my life, I know I want to get her tattooed on me. I’m thinking on my upper arm, right below the roses on my shoulder/upper arm. But, of course, that’s a huge decision and I need to think about it for at least a year before I go ahead and do it.

I love it! I can’t wait to start making dog treats for Shazam. We’re still easing him into his new food, and have tried a few different foods to test them out on his digestive system (quinoa and pumpkin!). So far so good. I’m sure I’ll be baking treats for him by the summer! 🙂
I made these today for Kaley. I still have the last bunch in the oven. They smell SO GOOD baking, I KNOW she’s going to Love them! I like them because they are healthy for them and the texture made it easy for cutting them . This is my go to because of this. i didn’t have oat flour so i measured instant oats into our Vitimix blender and Wahlah! PERFECT!! My neighbors fur babes Love them as well!!!

These look great! I’ve been wanting to make homemade peanut butter treats for my little puppy and have been looking at lots of different recipes. I like that this one also has pumpkin and doesn’t have any wheat. Can you tell me what the texture of these is like? Or they soft at all or are they hard and dry? Thank you!

Instead of the pumkin purée, I use two 4.25oz Beech Nut organic apple and pumkin baby food(they’re in glass) and add an additional 1/4 cup of oat flour. My dog eats these things up like…..wait no, she doesn’t eat them, she inhales these things!! AWESOME recipe!!! Thank you so much 😀
What would you say to using that powdered peanut butter, The PB2 stuff?

Hmmm… I haven’t tried that but it might work! You’ll need to reconstitute it with water (there should be directions on the bottle) though so it has the texture of PB before adding it to the recipe 🙂

I decided to not use that PB. I have my batch in the oven right now. I don’t have any cookie cutters so I just make a square, sliced it with a pizza cutter like it was a sicilian pizza and put the whole thing, parchment paper and all, right on a quarter sheet and into the oven.

My dog loves these! I added some grated ginger which is supposed to be as good for them as it is for us humans. I used pie crust cut outs. They made the perfect small size. Thanks for the recipe! Can’t wait to explore your site some more! This is my first recipe of yours so far.

I didn’t count the exact number because the recipe made SO many. If you look at the glass jar in the picture though, that should give you an idea of how much… maybe 4-5 cups? Hope this helps! And I hope your pet loves the treats 😀

I have a mccaw and I would like her and the various dogs we know to enjoy and they sound great for us to eat too! Throw in some grated carrots and they will be so thrilled! Might even share some with my avian vet 🙂

How long do these keep? We just got an older dog with a sensitive stomach who we have been click training. He has done so amazingly but id love to give him a healthier treat!
In the recipe, I say to store in a tightly sealed container at room temp for up to 2 days, then refrigerate up to 5 days. So you can just keep them in the fridge for ~1 week 🙂
Since I doubt I could use all the treats this recipe yields in 5 days, can I freeze them?
Absolutely! You can definitely freeze these treats. Just make sure to freeze them in an airtight freezer-safe container. When you want them for your pup, simply thaw them in the fridge overnight 🙂
I don’t think dogs should have cinnamon. Ask your vet.
Can I use a different flour? What I have on hand is bread flour, cake flour, coconut flour, almond flour, and all purpose flour. Thanks so much!
I haven’t tried using a different flour so I can’t be sure. Feel free to test out a blend of almond flour and all purpose flour! You can also try blending oats in a coffee grinder for a homemade oat flour 🙂

Yup! These dog treats are soft-baked, not crunchy, so they’re perfect for young pups, old pups, and those normal-aged dogs alike 😀

I’m sure the dough would be great as a toy stuffing! Dogs LOOOOOVE peanut butter! I would just make sure that the toy is cleaned out properly if you’re using the dough rather than the baked treats, since baked treats keep longer than a raw dough. Hope your pup likes the treats! 🙂
Hello, this looks great and im sure my dogs would love these. However, one of my yorkies is allergic to Oats, rice and flax. what can i substitute the oat flour with? thank you.
Thanks! Sorry to hear about your pup’s allergies. I haven’t tried replacing the oat flour here but I think you can try organic whole wheat flour instead! Hope your doggies like the treats 🙂
I’ve used regular white flour, wheat flour and oat flour and they’ve all turned out great. I figure no matter which you use they are sure to be healthier then store bought.

Hi Cuddie! The mini bones get baked at 350 degrees F for ~15 minutes. These yield soft cookies, so if you want them crunchy you can try leaving them in for a few extra minutes. Hope you all like the treats! 🙂

You can sub the pumpkin with whatever fruit/veggie puree you like! Sweet potato puree or banana puree sound great too 🙂

I will have to try this treats for my dog, Trixie Belle (we’re southern). She is a white boxer mix we adopted from the dog shelter and I adore her! She had to get some new food because the beet powder in her old one was staining her eyes and she didn’t like it. She was a thin little thing. We got her a new food of the Acana brand which she loves. Every night with dinner she will get a scoop of canned pumpkin with it to complete the meal. Occasionaly she will get a spoonful of peanut butter which she makes a big show of eating. I know she will LOVE these treats. Thank you so much Desserts with Benefits and Jessica! Cinnamon is TOXIC for dogs. Probably best to leave it right out of the recipe!!!

Can I sub coconut flour for oat? My dog can’t eat too much grains/starchy foods, it messes her up.
Coconut flour is a really unique flour and can’t replace other flours or be replaced easily since it absorbs so much liquid. If anything almond flour might be able to be used here, but you’ll need a lot more of it or a lot less wet ingredients since it doesn’t absorb much liquid at all.

My pup Koach is allergic to oatmeal…what other kind of flour could I use? Not sure if you or anyone else has tried.
I haven’t tried replacing the oat flour with anything but I suppose you can try brown rice flour! You may need to use a little extra flour, or you can reduce the pumpkin by a tablespoon or so. Hope Koach loves the treats!!
The pure pumpkin helps with digestion and is great for dogs…

My dogs need grain free treats, I’m not sure whether the oat flour will bother them or not. Is it possible to use Almond flour or something else in equal quantities?
I am not familiar with the equivalent ingredients.

I haven’t tried this recipe with almond flour, so I don’t know how it’ll work out. All I know is that oat flour absorbs more liquid than almond flour, so it might turn out more like a batter than a dough :/

I haven’t tried freezing these but they’re definitely freezer-friendly! Just freeze them in an airtight container, and when you need to thaw them, thaw them in the fridge overnight 🙂
