Healthy Black Velvet Frosting
This Healthy Black Velvet Frosting is thick, smooth, sweet, and chocolatey. You’d never know it’s all natural, refined sugar free, low carb, high protein, high fiber, gluten free, dairy free, AND vegan!
If you’re as obsessed with frostings and buttercreams and icings and glazes as I am, then you probably know how unhealthy they can be. All that sugar and butter and syrup is bound to taste good on our tastebuds, but what tastes good isn’t always the best for us — with the exception of this Healthy Black Velvet Frosting, of course 😉 — especially when self control flies out the window when magical dessert toppings are around.
God I love frosting so much it really makes no sense.
When I was making this Healthy Black Velvet Frosting, all I really wanted was a thick and spreadable, sweet and chocolatey frosting to make as a snack.
Because, yes, I believe frosting should be a food group.

Healthy Black Velvet Frosting
Ingredients
- 168g (8 scoops) Chocolate Brown Rice Protein Powder
- 30g (6 tbs) Unsweetened Natural Cocoa Powder
- 70g (½ cup) Powdered Erythritol
- 3½ tsp Activated Charcoal Powder
- 1½ cups Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
- 128g (½ cup) Roasted Almond Butter
- ½ tbs Liquid Stevia Extract
- 2 tsp Vanilla Paste
Instructions
- In a stand mixer bowl fitted with a whisk attachment, add all of the ingredients.
- Mix on low speed until combined, then increase to medium speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, then mix again. Increase speed to high and beat until completely smooth.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Frost (or eat straight up with a spoon) the next day!
Yes. For realz. This Healthy Black Velvet Frosting is packed with a whopping 25g of protein (???) and 7g of filling fiber. Not to mention, ZERO added sugar, butter, margarine, shortening, artificial flavors, and artificial colors.
Compared to a ½ cup serving of Pillsbury’s Dark Chocolate Frosting, a ½ cup serving of my Healthy Black Velvet Frosting has:
- 270 less calories
- 13g less fat
- 69g less sugar
Did your jaw just drop to the floor? Because mine just did. Can you believe that for the SAME AMOUNT OF FROSTING, Pillsbury has 520 calories and mine has 250? And Pillsbury’s is full of 72g of sugar while mine just has 3g of naturally occurring sugar (no sugar is added).
Un-be-lievable.
Soooo yeah, I’ll take an extra spoonful or three of my frosting thank you very much. If you could just funnel this into my face, that’d be grrrrreeeaaattt, thanks. I am perfectly content with having a frosting hangover.
Enjoy!

Reminds me of “the grey stuff” from Disney, except indulgently healthy 😉

will this still work without the erythritol or does the erythritol add structure (or is purely for sweetness)? this looks AWESOME by the way. Thanks!
The erythritol provides both texture and sweetness. You can substitute it with powdered sugar if you prefer!
What is activated charcoal
